Skirt point one.

This was the turning point in my technique, where I finally remembered to use the cheap cotton *first*. And it turned out pretty nice, and was easy to adjust when the waist was too wide.
The only problem with this skirt is that I don't like the color. I was combing the many, MANY fabric stores in the fashion district on my first day out there, and it took a very long time to find plain, cheap, non stretchy cotton fabric. So long that I was tired, hungry, and fraught with eyestrain by the time I found some.

Originally I'd wanted the Tardis-blue fabric next to this bolt, but b/c they only had about a yard left I used that for the tank top pattern I posted earlier. For some reason, I saw this fabric and thought it was more purple. Whups. Well, I have the card of the cheap-cotton-selling place, so next time I'll hit their shop *before* browsing the other places.
Also, I screwed up laying out the pattern, so the front is two panels instead of one. Added extra for seam allowance, kept it all in line with the grain, and it all turned out OK. Phew.
Otherwise, its comfy, comfy length, easy to hem to compensate for my large butt, easy to bring in the yoke when it was too wide, and it is SHO MUCH SKIRT:

This pattern would work well with tons of long-skirt costume ideas. And can probably be made with just about anything (tho lighter fabrics would be easier to wear when there's so much fabric involved. Not sure if the yoke (with zipper in the back) would be comfy under full corsets, but there are plenty of other options. I'm usually more into circle skirts (and will try making them someday soon), but its nice to try something different once in a while.

But still... magenta. Hmm. I have worn it around, its probably not as bad as I think, and when in doubt everything matches with black. At least I opted out of the big sash/bow thing. I'm not a fan of extra ties/bows that don't actually serve to tie the garment together.
Part of my order from Joanne's will be two servings of cotton to make two more of these (probably). A dark purple pattern and a dark blue pattern, still cheap but nicer looking than the plain magenta. Y'know, if I ever manage to take it from the clutches of Fedex.
I did get another shipment of patterns from the McCalls triumvirate yesterday, so that should keep me busy too. Am going to try my best not to order more commercial patterns for a while, tho I may try the cheap/free downloads I've seen on some websites. Otherwise I'll try altering existing patterns before buying new ones.
